Founded in 1984
Jim O'Brien and Mick Connelly (referred to as Mr. Connelly) opened Cabarrus Schwinn in 1984 in an old gas station with 37 bikes, 212 tires and a vision. A customer suggested they sell skateboards, which they did and turned a profit starting from the third month. In 1988, Jim attended the USCF Mechanics Seminar in Colorado Springs and formed connections with pro cyclists, leading to more time spent on the road with teams and the formation of the POWRFIT. In 1990, the shop moved to the Cloverleaf Plaza and was renamed The Right Gear, as Jim's team travel increased and product offerings were fine-tuned by dropping and adding lines. Our sizing and fit formulation continued to improve.
In 1992, Mr. Connolly sold his share to Jim, who continued to work with pro teams and consult with professionals globally. In 2012, the shop moved to its present location on Church Street, attracting cyclists worldwide for Jim's expertise.
In 2023, Jim handed the shop over to Jason Pressley and Matt Hartman, who aim to expand the product offerings and services. The current brand lineup includes Giant, Pinarello, Santa Cruz, Bianchi, Roll Bikes, Niner, Vaast among others.
